What role did money play in our ancestor's life? Why does a state mint coins, and when should he rather pass it on? How does one pay in a country, where there are up to 8,000 different coin types circulating? These and related questions are answered in the exhibition «The Money of our Ancestors».
Based on one of the most important private collections of Swiss coins, we will have a look at the everyday monetary life of our ancestors in Eastern Switzerland. The presentation unites great rarities and inconspicuous small change. We will tell you where and when all these coins were in use, and you will be amazed to see how the everyday monetary system of the pre-1848 Ancient Régime differs from how we pay and save nowadays.
